Middle School Biology Department:Aquaponics System

All fifth graders took part in an interesting experiment last month.

We used a 2 liter bottle and cut off the top 1/3. We then added soil and seeds to the top portion. Next, we put rocks, plants, and water in the lower part of the bottle. We were instructed to poke three holes in the cap so that the plants can send oxygen down to the fish and the fish can send back carbon dioxide. We then inserted the top part upside down into the bottom. Finally we put fish into the water, and were required to give it a little bit of food every day. Everyone brought this ecosystem home and took care of it over the past few weeks.

Through this experiment, we have a better understanding of interactions in an ecosystem.
