Introduction of Biology Club

2018-11-07

The Biology Club is a great way to have fun and have delicious after school snacks. Club members meet every other Tuesday at the lab. In the first few weeks, the Biology club has done examinations on microscopic things, tested for Vitamin C in many fruits, and will make pizza when studying yeast.

The first experiment with microscopes was a simple one that reviewed club member’s knowledge on microscope usage. Using an indicator, students compared the nucleus of one organism to that of another.

In the second experiment, students brought in many fruits for Vitamin C testing and, of course, for an afternoon snack as well. By squeezing fruit juice into a small cup and mixing it with Potassium Permanganate one drop at a time, the fruit juice will slowly change color. After a certain amount of drops, the fruit juice will completely change color. This happened because of an oxidation-reduction reaction, which may lead to the fading of Potassium Permanganate. By comparing the number of drops it took to change the color of the fruit juice, the amount of Vitamin C can be found.

In the next club session, it’s time for pizza! We will be studying how yeast can make the dough rise and then we will start making it. Hopefully, everyone will get a delicious pizza filled with toppings! Orthor: Candice
